Cold weather emergency

3 ways to help during a Cold Emergency

DC remains under a Cold Weather Emergency Alert, which makes staying outside extremely dangerous for the 7,500 of our neighbors currently experiencing homelessness in DC.

3 WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

1. Program the DC Hypothermia Hotline Number into your phone:

If you see somebody staying outside, express concern and offer to call the Hypothermia Hotline at 202-399-7093. The Hypothermia Hotline can transport people to shelter or bring them blankets.

2. Urge Mayor Bowser to invest in housing to end chronic homelessness.

Shelters, while vital for DC’s short-term crisis response system, do not end homelessness; housing does. Unfortunately, people experiencing chronic homelessness face life-threatening conditions year-round; not just when it's cold. Please sign this petition urging Mayor Bowser to invest $35.5 million in ending chronic homelessness.

3. Learn about DC’s affordable housing and homelessness crises.

Read this powerful article written by our Steering Committee member, Waldon Adams, about the systemic causes of chronic homelessness in DC.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our neighbors who have been denied the dignity of housing for far too long.
